On the Problem of Difference...A Response to Deborah Padgett's Review of Ian Shaw's and Nick Gould's Qualitative Research in Social WorkLa Trobe University, Australia This piece is intended to respond to Deborah Padgett's commentary on the book Qualitative Research in Social Work by Shaw and Gould. The response focuses on some of the specific issues raised in relation to cross-national work. In particular it comments on the problem of how differences of interpretation and of national and cultural background can be incorporated into forging a new vision for social work practice and research. The need for an inclusive approach, to what must be seen as a `work-in-progress' is strongly argued for.
Key Words: cross-national differences inclusive approaches to research paradigmatic differences
